The quarry was established in 1964 by Blue Circle Industries to extract limestone for cement production.
Eastgate Quarry was a major limestone quarry supporting the Eastgate Cement Works from the 1960s to the early 2000s.
It played an important role in local industry and employment.
After closure, the cement works were demolished in 2005; the quarry site itself has largely been restored and landscaped.
Though industrial operations have ceased, the site is notable to mineral collectors, has seen geothermal exploration, and now hosts specimen mining and occasional cultural uses.
Part of the restored quarry area has been used as a film set - for example, for the ITV production Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands.
